Who will play quarterback? Freshman Braxton Burmeister, or sophomore Justin Herbert? Taggart hasn’t showed his hand this week, nor has he definitely said whether Herbert has been medically cleared to play five weeks after fracturing a collarbone.
“There had been a history of Washington stealing some games from Oregon… they were heavily favored, they were nationally ranked… at the reality we were fighting, clawing and scratching trying to compete with them… that play symbolizes equality, and a point in time where Oregon eclipsed…”
On why the Oregon vs. Washington rivalry was fueled: “The goal of overtaking Washington was Bill Moos’ goal as AD. He came from the state of Washington and he recognized that beating Washington meant a lot in the Pacific Northwest.”
But the QB who helped lead UO to a 4-1 record took repetitions with the first-team offense Wednesday, with Burmeister behind him. “Justin made some big-time plays out there (Tuesday) that got everybody excited,” Taggart said. “He’s competing and out competing and getting better and looking really good. Really good.”
Herbert’s potential return would make Oregon’s offense more potent but even an improved attack could struggle against the Huskies’ rebuilt defense, which is the best at limiting big plays in the country and allows 12.1 points per game, fourth-best nationally.
Aschoff: Oregon is another team hoping to get its best player back this weekend. Quarterback Justin Herbert could return from his collarbone injury, and coach Willie Taggart said he could have played last week. But even with Herbert, Washington is just too talented on both sides of the ball. Washington 34, Oregon 24
