The Wake Forest Demon Deacons have had a surprisingly good year so far. Maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise, but most of us generally don’t have a positive outlook for Wake Forest at the beginning of most college football seasons. Add to the fact that the Demon Deacons lost their defensive coordinator and linebackers coach to a small school in the Midwest, and their ceiling for 2017 seemed low.

The Demon Deacons actually were a bit of a bright spot with its play so far, and are primed to make a bowl game this season. However, they will face the Irish without two of its best players in wide receiver Greg Dortch and defensive back (and Fort Wayne native) Jessie Bates III.

“I hired Mike at Fordham when he was 23 years old, and he was with me at every stop: Fordham, Richmond, Bowling Green and Wake Forest,” says Clawson. “Mike is a great coach, a good person. We’re still very good friends. We won’t talk this week, but I have great respect for Mike.

“We’re both professionals. This week we want to beat Notre Dame and Notre Dame wants to beat Wake Forest. And when it’s over, I’m sure we’ll have a good talk.

“But it’s mixed emotions. Mike did a great job here and everywhere he’s been for me but, on the other hand, I’m really proud of the job he’s doing there. He’s had a huge, huge impact on their program in just not even a full year. Remeber Wake Forest vs Notre Dame Online Here.

“But I’m hoping this week that they maybe have a bunch of breakdowns and they don’t look as good.”

Clawson had a simple reason for how the Irish have turned around their fortunes from a 4-8 mark in 2016:

Running back Cade Carney will also miss the game. On the year, he has 56 carries for 219 yards and one touchdown. He was injured in the win over Louisville last weekend. In the Georgia Tech game the week before last, Carney had 19 carries for 92 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Wake Forest will be without safety Jessie Bates III, a Fort Wayne native. Bates is a super-talented sophomore defensive back and one that has the numbers to back that up. He has 64 tackles on the year, including six tackles for loss. He also grabbed an interception as well.
